The Anima Arts Collective was founded in 2020 by Aiyana and is an anti-speciesist project platform, advocating the reimagination of animality and humanity, using community care and art as tools for liberation.
We recognise the need for a multi-dimensional and intersectional approach, with a focus on animal liberation. We are against all oppression.
We reject the human/animal binary and look for new, non-oppressive ways in which we can define ourselves.
We believe art is an essential part of revolution and healing, especially for more marginalised communities.
Inspired by the practices of The Nap Ministry, we encourage resting, as a form of resistance against capitalistic grind culture.
We hold a pedagogy of love and care and feel that the most successful way of practicing self-care is through resistance and liberation.
Our events exist as brave spaces where activists can discuss, learn and grow through conversation and art.
We believe that POWER IS THE PEOPLE and that the most authentic, universal and infinite power resides not in money, cars, weapons or material things but in the strength of the people.
Why did you create the Anti Speciesist Arts Collective?
It was created because of a lack of self care in the (nonhuman)animal rights movement. We saw activists putting themselves in emotionally challenging and draining positions, without properly caring for themselves afterwards. We believe art is a great way to combat this as it is expressive, stress relieving and fun! Self care is so important because it reduces the risk of burnout. By taking a little step back and time for yourself every now and then, you can make yourself so much more sustainable as an activist.
What We Do At A Glance
Anti-Speciesist
As anti-speciesists, we aim not only to support other human allies, but also want to focus on nonhumans and understand they are their own leaders, inspirations and activists. We do not speak for them, but stand in solidarity with them. Anti-speciesism includes all human and planet liberation too, as all oppression is connected and therefore, we cannot ever truly eradicate one without dismantling the others.
Arts
Art is an amazing, therapeutic and global way of communication as well as a natural part of animal life. By creating art, you can express your emotions and dissect your thoughts, practice self-care and improve yourself as an activist. This will strengthen us individually, and as a whole movement.
Collective
We are a collective. Everyone's opinions and contributions are valued equally, so feel free at any time to email us with constructive criticism, suggestions and advice. We can only achieve true global and total liberation if we come together to unite and fight against the oppressive systems we live in.
What do we want? TOTAL LIBERATION! When do we want it? NOW! :)
